In History: The name Onyx has it's roots in Roman history meaning fingernails, it was named such as they thought the stone looked similar to the luster of polished nails and in Hebrew the word signifies "shining or gleaming stones" In more modern times the stone metaphysically is reported to increase vigor, reduce tension and nervousness.
